UTD offers courses in music theory at several levels for all students. MUSI 2328, Music Theory, provides a review of music notation, patterns and structure and prepares students for further study in analysis or composition. Students may then take MUSI 3342, Creating Music, to study techniques of composition and songwriting. Students may also study sound design and music sequencing in MUSI 3389 Digital Music/MIDI LAB. Students with prior training may contact the instructor to obtain permission to waive the lower level prerequisite and enroll in these classes. More advanced students may obtain permission to take MUSI 4V71, Independent Study in Music under a faculty member‚s direction.

Music students without previous music training are also encouraged to take MUSI 1306, Understanding Music; MUSI 2322, Music in Western Civilization; MUSI 2324, Beginning Instrumental Instruction (Guitar, Piano) or Beginning Instrumental Ensemble (Orchestra); MUSI 2325, Beginning Voice; MUSI 2326, Jazz Ensemble I; MUSI 2327 Vocal Ensemble (UTD Chorale); and MUSI 3322, Music in Historical Context to broaden their skills and understanding of music.
