Film Studies is an academic field that studies the history, aesthetics, and ideology of cinema from a number of different critical and theoretical perspectives. Courses on a variety of topics--authorship, national cinemas, genre, cinematic adaptation--consider film as a medium, as an art form, as an industry, and as a system of representation.
