Dance is the newest
art form to be offered at The University of Texas at
Dallas. Under the instruction of Micki Saba and Michele
Hanlon, it is a young and very exciting new program.
It has grown from two general introductory dance courses
to a number of classes ranging from Beginning Jazz to
Dance History. Courses offered in the program are Beginning
Modern, Continuing Modern, Movement Development, Jazz
Dance, Dance Performance, and Dance History.
The program has two companies that perform both on campus
and throughout the community. The UTDance Ensemble gives
students registered in the performance classes an opportunity
to perform both on the main stage at our annual invitational
dance concert and in many community dance events. The
newly developed M Project, co-directed and developed
by Saba and Hanlon, is designed to bring professional
dance to UTD and give students at a higher technical
level a chance to work with experienced and advanced
dancers.
UTD is a member of the American College Dance Festival
Association and sponsored students for the first time
this year to participate in their regional festival.
Students were able to participate in continuous classes,
see numerous concerts, and presented their own work
to be adjudicated. Plans for more technique classes,
performance opportunities, and program development are
being designed for the future development of dance at
UTD.
