This concert features the works of Texas composer and The University of Texas Lee Hage Jamail Regents Professor Dan Welcher. An established symphonic composer, Welcher has received numerous awards, produced an award-winning radio series entitled “Knowing the Score,” and was Composer-in-Residence with the Honolulu Symphony (1990) and Assistant Conductor of the Austin Symphony (1980-1990). The concert will include the world premiere of How to Make Coq Au Vin, three songs based on the writings of James Hoggard, a former poet laureate of Texas.

------------------

While Dan Welcher is an established symphonic composer, as director of the U.T. Austin New Music Ensemble, he has created many works for smaller forces.  Recent works include Go Slow, My Soul (2003) with text by Emily Dickinson and How to Make Coq Au Vin (2005), with text by James Hoggard.

Critics applaud Dan Welcher:
John Ardoin in the Dallas Morning News: “A bright voice to listen to… he has something to say, and he says it directly and in a way very much his own.”

Charles Ward in the Houston Chronicle: “Stylistically, Welcher’s music has great character.  It is assertively contemporary in its dissonance, but it has a good foundation of tonality.
