Tom Bywaters' career was spent working in network television
in New York and California. He has produced/directed
and/or written over 125 network specials (ABC, NBC),
documentaries, late-night shows (David Frost), children
series (Make a Wish), performances (Great Performances-PBS),
and movies. His emphasis is through his experiences
in the real world of film and television. In one class
taught each term, the students make a complete, full-length,
made-for-television movie. In another course, students
in groups of five produce a full-length documentary.
Another class is concerned with negotiating deals, labor
relations, and distribution rights for film and television
here and overseas. Mr. Bywaters received his undergraduate
degree from Yale University and spent three years in
graduate studies at Rice University. He has produced
two long-running series for ABC (Americans All, Minorities
in America; Make a Wish, a children's prime-time network
series) one series with the BBC and the first season
of the series Nature, which still runs on PBS. He has
won two Emmys, three Peabody awards, the Golden Gavel
Award from the American Bar Association, and many other
awards.
