New! A&H Honor Thesis or Project

The A&H Honors Program offers the opportunity for advanced creative and scholarly work and recognition. To earn A&H Honors, students must graduate with (a) a minimum of 30, graded, upper-division semester credit hours at UTD, (b) at least 12 hours of upper-division courses in the student's major with a GPA of 3.80 in those courses, and (c) the completion of an honors thesis or project evaluated by 2 faculty members with a grade of at least B+.

Students may undertake either an honors thesis (a substantial research or critical paper at least 20 pages in length) or an honors project (a substantial creative production in addition to a paper at least 5 pages in length).

Students are responsible for securing a supervisor for their thesis or project. We recommended beginning planning for the honors thesis or project as early as possible, ideally one or two semesters prior to undertaking the thesis or project. The faculty supervisor will help the student to select a second reader. Students who wish to undertake a creative honors project must have successfully completed at least one practice-based course at UTD in an appropriate medium.

For more information, students should contact their academic advisor.

REGISTER NOW for the Elan International Music Festival
held June 9 - 21, 2008

The Elan International Music Festival program was developed by Ronald Neal in 1996. The mission of Elan International is to develop environments conducive to the study and exchange of musical ideas and techniques for musicians. Master Artist Teachers joined by emerging young artists form the basic structure of these cultural exchanges. Elan International Music Festivals have been held in Taos and Angel Fire, New Mexico and in Stowe and Stratton, Vermont. The Elan ideal was expanded in 2003 when Ronald Neal served as artistic director of the first Northern China International Chamber Music Festival held in Shenyang. Summer of 2008 will mark the first Elan venture in Dallas.

“Virtual World Art & Design in Second Life”
debuted Saturday, May 3, at the Horchow Auditorium, Dallas Museum of Art

High culture comes to gamers with the help of a group of graduate students from UT Dallas Arts & Technology program.

Twelve graduate students have created a virtual art education environment in which art lovers can learn about museum practices and the visual arts. Among the activities to do in this virtual world gallery are the following:

  • Take a two-dimensional painting and create an avatar from painters Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” or Pablo Picasso’s “The Guitarist.”
  • Learn how to mount an exhibition of just about any great work of art or historical subject matter that would not be possible in a real-life museum. For example, the student’s virtual museum exhibition is of a Mayan pyramid.
  • Interact with art experts and learn the principles of design, color and light.
  • Stroll through a virtual art gallery with works created by UT Dallas students.
