| MASTER OF
ARTS IN HUMANITIES
The program leading to the M.A. in
Humanities is designed both for individuals wishing
to enhance their knowledge and skills and for students
intending to pursue a doctorate in a humanistic field.
Course offerings include not only seminars stressing
the interpretation and criticism of specific works and
issues, but also ensembles, studios, and workshops in
which the activity of creation and/or performance becomes
the primary means of learning.
Students seeking an M.A. in Humanities
have two options, a “research” option and
a “professional” option. Students pursuing
the “research” option must complete thirty
semester hours of course work, demonstrate reading proficiency
in an approved foreign language, and successfully complete
and defend a portfolio. Students pursuing the “professional”
option must complete thirty hours of course work, all
normally in organized courses and distributed as in
the “research” option. They are not required
to complete a portfolio or meet a foreign language requirement.
Active involvement in the process
of creation and performance is basic to the design of
the Aesthetic Studies area of concentration. Therefore
students working at the M.A. level with an emphasis
in Aesthetic Studies are required to take at least one
ensemble/workshop. Students pursuing the “research”
M.A. with an emphasis in Aesthetic Studies may submit
a creative project as part of their portfolio.
